4 Tips to Reduce Dark Bags Under Eyes As You Age


   

Dark circles or bags under eyes can be caused by a number of factors. Genetics often play a role in under eye discoloration and certain ethnicities including those of African and Asian descent are more prone to under eye bags. Age is also a factor because as you age, the skin around your eyes thins, exposing the tiny blood vessels just below the skin and causing the appearance of dark circles. When the tissues under the eyes weaken, fluid can accumulate.

Dark circles under eyes can also be caused by volume or loss of liquid around the eyes, which exposes the orbital bone, creating a hollow trough. Bags under eyes are normally just a cosmetic concern and are rarely a sign of a serious medical condition. But if the bags become severe, are accompanied by redness, and or itching, you may want to see a doctor.

Avoid Dark Bags Under Eyes As You Age

1. Protect your skin.

The skin under the eyes is extra sensitive to environmnetal toxins including sun damage and smoking. Skip the cigarettes and always apply sunscreen under the eyes. Both smoking and UV exposure can also weaken collagen under the eyes, causing reduced elasticity.

2. Find a good moisturizer.

Find a good moisturizer to apply daily. Look for natural ingredients that reduce puffiness and discoloration like witch hazel, which naturally diminishes swelling and fluid retention under the eyes. Niacinamide is another great ingredient because it has a natural skin lightening compound to erase dark circles.

3. Get enough sleep.

As you age, the body has more and more trouble recovering when you don’t get enough sleep. Try and get into a routine where you get at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night and your skin will thank you for it later. Sleeping on your back can also help reduce bags under eyes.

4. Calm puffy eyes.

For those days when you need a little extra help, calm puffy eyes with cool spoons, slices of cucumbers, chilled tea bags, or even a package of frozen peas. All of these home remedies help reduce puffiness and fluid retention.
