Races are great because they give you motivation to train and stay in shape. But you don’t have to be training to stay fit. Loosen the reigns on your running routine without losing your fitness level. Here’s how:
1. Make running dates.
Keep running fun when you’re not training by making it a social event. If you plan to meet a friend, you’re less likely to skip out on a workout. Not to mention that running pals may push you to run harder than you normally would.
2. Consider trail running.
Trail running is a great way to keep running exciting when you don’t have the carrot of an event in front of you. You get to enjoy beautiful natural scenes while you’re getting a workout.
3. Build in a few speed workouts.
While it’s just fine to loosen your schedule a bit, make sure you’re building in at least a few speed workouts to stay in shape.
4. Find an alternative workout.
Add a new activity that you love to compliment your new fitness routine. Maybe consider yoga for flexibility or pilates for long and lean muscles. It doesn’t matter what you try because it’s all about keeping your body moving.
You don’t always have to be in full training mode to maintain an optimal level of fitness.
