Just because summer is almost over doesn’t mean that you should let your tootsies get gross. Especially considering that sandal season is still in full swing. It’s the perfect time of year for a natural pedicure. Your feet look glorious and you get to relax with a nice foot massage. But if you get regular pedicures, you may be unknowingly exposing yourself to a number of hazardous chemicals.
From nail polish to removers, products at nail salons may contain dangerous chemicals. Acetone, found in nail polish remover, can cause headaches, dizziness as well as irritated eyes, skin, and throat. And butyl acetate, found in nail polish, nail polish remover, and fingernail glue, can also irritate the respiratory system. Nail products can even contain cancer-causing formaldehyde and toluene.
That’s why if you love getting pedicures, you may want to consider more natural treatments.
1. Soak your tootsies.
Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil to 1 gallon of water and soak for 15 minutes. Remove your feet from the foot bath and dry completely.
2. Choose nail polish remover that doesn’t contain acetone.
Remove old nail polish without irritating chemicals like acetone, butyl acetate, and isopropyl acetate.
3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
Slather your feet in organic lotion. Take your time to massage your toes, arch, and ankles.
4. Apply the polish.
Choose an organic nail polish that doesn’t contain some of the more dangerous chemicals like toluene, formaldehyde, or DBP.
