While you may think that under eye bags are simply a side effect of aging, that just isn’t the case. The tissues under the eyes are already thin and fragile and while they do get thinner as you age, that doesn’t mean that under eye bags are a definite. Here are some root causes of bags under eyes.
Allergies Cause Fluid Retention
When you retain fluid, the evidence often shows up under the eyes first. But if you identify the root cause, then you can work toward treating it. Allergies can cause under eye bags because they cause inflammation. Additionally, the inflammation can cause irritation, causing you to rub your eyes, which makes the problem that much worse. Allergies can also cause that dreaded fluid retention which draws negative attention to your under eye area.
A sinus infection, which results from allergies, can also cause under eye bags. Sinus infections cause local inflammation as well as facial pressure. You can prevent allergies by using a neti pot. Neti pots irrigate the nasal cavity so that it does not become clogged or inflamed. Neti pots are preventative so they should be used throughout the year, long before your allergies become a problem.
The Biggest Cause of Under Eye Bags
Not getting enough sleep is likely the most common reason for under eye bags. First, take a closer look at why you can’t sleep at night. Are you drinking too much caffeine throughout the day, especially after 2 pm? Are you stressed out and in need of relaxing activities like yoga or meditation? Is that night cap causing you to wake up in the middle of the night? Whatever the cause, identify it, but in the mean time, treat under eye bags with cucumber slices, cooled tea bags, or cooled spoons.
Finally, a salty dinner can also cause under eye bags so don’t partake if you have an event coming up. A salty meal or a night of crying can cause bags under eyes because of osmosis. Water travels in the body from areas of low salt to areas of high salt, often gathering under your eyes.
