The winter months can seem long, dreary and depressive. Research shows that people often feel an increase in feeling blaze, lethargy, and experience trouble getting up in the morning from the time after the holiday season until the clocks “spring forward”. There are ways that you can beat the winter blues and lift your spirits (other than with a very strong pot of java!).
- Listen to music
Whether it’s soulful or hard rock, listening to music has this way of transforming you to another place. Music can affect our emotions, so when you listen to happy songs, you often feel happier and when you listen to soothing music research shows that it can reduce stress and anxiety. Use music to help you improve your work day, increase your motivation to get thru your workout or simply just to relax at the end of along day.
- Get outside
Taking in a breath of fresh air is so important for our mind and mood. Fresh air helps to increase the flow of oxygen through your lungs and body helping to distress and improve your mental and physical wellbeing. Regardless of the weather, try getting outside as often as possible even if it’s just for a short walk. On warmer winter days, you can always open your windows a little bit or stand outside your front door. 10-15 minutes is all you need to make a difference.
- Be social
Research shows that being around people can play a large positive role on your health and wellbeing. Often when it’s cold outside and you’re tired or down, the last thing you want to do is go out. But being around friends (even just one) can improve your mood and help lift your spirits. Meet a co-worker for lunch or a coffee break, take in a weekend movie with a friend or invite family over for dinner.
